Life Science 10/29-11/1

Objective this week:  To learn and understand how to use a microscope, and apply its use in the classroom and life.  Understand that living things are made of cells.

Tuesday
Introduction to Microscopes/Lab

Wednesday
Introduction to cells; give a basic pre-test and discuss.  Watch a video over cells.

Thursday, Friday
Creative activity - design your own "animal".  Paint, and list specializations, adaptations, and special cell structures for this "creature".  Project needs to be completed by Friday, 4pm.

Objective this week:  Be able to apply your understanding of  the scientific method to solve a real-world problem.

Tuesday
Discuss environmental concerns:  Air pollution,  deforestation, burning of fossil fuels, etc.  Share websites based on these environmental issues as part of an Edmodo assignment.  Discuss any solutions you have for the problems and share.

Wednesday
Use science to design a solution for plastic bottles.  Design a better bottle that puts a smaller footprint on the environment. Use the scientific method in your design solution.

Differentiated group activity - "The 400-Acre Wood".  This is a cross-curricular activity dealing with math, social studies, and scientific principles and how they relate to forest lands.

This week we will wrap up the insect collection.  Throughout the week we will either be going outside to collect insects (weather permitting), or putting the collection together.

Anatomy 10/14-10/18

Bone anatomy, bone classifications, and bone functions

Tuesday
Begin endochondral ossification.  Further discussion of bone anatomy

Wednesday - Friday
Design a teachable lesson over bone anatomy, including a bone model

Zoology 10/14-10/18

The goal for this week is to understand fully the different levels in an ocean ecosystem, the animals that live there, and the effects of coral reef biology in ocean systems.  Be able to take a test over this material by the end of the week.

Monday
Whale multimedia project due today by 4pm.  Discuss coral reefs.

Tuesday - Thursday
Wrap up the ocean unit and begin review for the test.

This week our goal is to learn about cooperative behavior with different animal species and learn & understand how this affects their survival.

Monday
Video - Fire Ants...colony work, physics of fire ant rafts, etc.  There will be a reflection due by Friday, 4pm over this video.  Please make sure it's completed by that time.

Tuesday
Begin discussing cooperative animal behavior.  Have students brainstorm animal species that exhibit cooperative animal behavior.  Then allow students to choose from a list of five specific animals that work together cooperatively.  Begin working on a presentation over your findings.  This is phase one on this project.
