Thursday Quizzes ... What to expect (Biology, 6th Grade, 7th Grade, Field Biology)

Here are some things to concentrate on for tomorrow's quizzes in the following classes:

Biology:

We've been talking about mitosis and meiosis.  Be able to put the stages in order ... prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase.  Be able to distinguish the stages in these processes apart by correctly pairing photos of the stages with the names of the corresponding stage.  Understand how mitosis and meiosis are different, and what the specific differences are, along with the importance of each process to your life.  The quiz will be multiple choice, short answer, and possibly matching as well .....

6th Grade:

Understand the differences between renewable and non-renewable resources, examples of each, and their importance.  This quiz will be a combination of multiple choice and short answer/fill- in questions.

7th Grade:

Be able to explain why geologic time and "our" time are completely different concepts.  Be able to tell, in general, what organisms lived in the Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic Eras.  Also, be able to answer these questions:

What Era included the Devonian Period?
What Era included the Triassic Period?
What Era included the Jurassic Period?
What Era included the Cretaceous Period?
What Era are we in right now?

Zoology Tick Quiz on Friday!!

There will be a tick quiz on Friday, 11/6/15.  Here is what you will need to know for it:


  • The quiz will be on paper, not on Quia.
  • You will have five minutes to study in class for it.
  • Be able to identify Lone Star Ticks and American Dog Ticks from a picture
  • Study and know the life stages of a tick, from egg to adult, including correct leg numbers
  • Male vs female tick ... how to tell the difference?
  • Hypostome - what is it?
  • How do you correctly and safely remove a tick that's embedded in your skin?
  • Lyme Disease .... what does it do?
  • What are some measures you should take to reduce tick exposure when outside?

  • Total points = +15 (test points)


**This is a critical thinking activity to explain the importance of biodiversity in the ecosystem.  Basically students were given until the end of the period to collect eight things and explain their importance in the ecosystem.  This was due by the end of class today.  If you're not here, it needs to be completed when you get back ... the easiest way is to film it with your phone, or bring it to me in the morning or after school.  If you've passed the attendance policy guidelines (your five days), remember it's due when you get back so you don't miss these points. **

Usually for my lesson plans, I post headings for Monday - Friday and then list what all is happening for those days.  This study really depends on what we have in the pit traps, and how long it takes to sort the insects/specimens in class.  The bulk of this class will involve filling out data charts and comparing group data.  Data charts will most likely be filled out on Tuesday & Thursday, with MWF being dedicated to sampling/collecting data.  Grades will be given for data charts and participation within groups for this activity.  This is a great way to do hands-on application with the NGSS Standards......

6th Grade Shoutout!!

Zoology Bird Journals ... IMPORTANT!!

I am modifying the bird journal slightly .... I would like you to have a minimum of THREE entries.  For Seniors, this will be due by 8pm on Wednesday 5/13.  For Juniors, this will be due by 4pm on Tuesday, 5/19.  Thanks!

Zoology Mammal Test tomorrow, 5/12

This test will cover:

The bulk of the mammal groups:  monotremes, marsupials, and placental mammals.  Know which animals belong in each, and the different characteristics of each group (eggs, pouches, umbilical cords, etc)

Know facts about elk, deer, mice, and bats in Kansas, as discussed in class.  If you don't have this info, get notes from somebody who does.

Know several facts from the rat dissection.

**This test will be all multiple-choice, and will be on Quia.**

Important Final Information .... ALL CLASSES!!

Here is everything you need to know about anything final-related:

Final Schedule:

1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th:  Monday, 5/18
6th, 8th:  Tuesday, 5/19

Seniors:

 3rd, 7th:  Tuesday, 5/12
2nd, 6th:  Wednesday 5/13


Specifics:

First hour Biology:  The test will be all multiple choice, and will cover bacteria, viruses, protista, and up to ten random review questions from the school year.

2nd & 8th hour A & P:  The test will cover second semester material and will be multiple choice.  Emphasis will be on digestive, reproductive, nervous, and special senses systems.

3rd & 7th hour Zoology:  The test will cover mostly mammals and/or amphibians, birds, & reptiles

6th hour Field Biology:  The test will cover mainly wildlife legislation, farm pond management facts, environmental concerns (study your landfill notes/waste category notes), and mammal facts

5th hour Life Science:  This test will mainly cover ecology, punnett squares/genetics, and other concepts.  More information will be given in class.

Zoology Mammal Quiz Info

Hey everyone,

First of all, I want to say I'm glad you're all safe after the storms the other night.  It was a crazy evening, to say the least!  With school being called off on Thursday, it set us back a day for the testing schedule.  Today we will have the practical over the rat .... and then on Monday, we'll take the mammal quiz.  Here is the rundown for the mammal quiz on Monday:

Know what makes a mammal a mammal (a minimum of four facts)

Know facts about these orders:  Monotremes, marsuipals, and placental mammals

Know facts about the following Kansas animals (some of you may have been absent, so get these notes before you take this quiz!):
